100 Years in a Bottle of Louis XIII

Rémy Martin has launched Louis XIII Rare Cask 42,6 into Americas duty free, with DFS North America given exclusivity on the US$24,000 Cognac until the end of October.  Louis XIII Rare Cask 42,6 is the second distinctive barrel to be discovered in the Cognac’s history, with only enough liquid to produce 738 decanters. It has an ABV of 42.6%, slightly higher than the 40% of the classic Louis XIII. Each decanter is engraved with a unique number from 1 to 738.

The decanter was officially unveiled at Los Angeles International Airport’s Tom Bradley International Terminal in a ceremony attended by DFS and Rémy Cointreau Travel Retail Americas. It is housed in DFS’s Rare Pillar showcase, and is revealed by pulling aside outer display panels designed to be similar to the coffret that contains the decanter. “DFS is pleased to continue our long standing relationship with Rémy Martin and our mutual commitment to rare and extraordinary bottles,” said DFS North America Managing Director Polly Nelson. “In the past several years we have had success with bottles such as the Rémy Martin Louis XIII Black Pearl for US$55,000. We are looking forward to even more partnerships and success in the years to come.” As previously reported, this second rare cask made its global travel retail debut with DFS at Changi Airport earlier this year. louis-xiii-cognac Originally discovered in 2009, the evolution of the cask was followed closely by the House of Rémy Martin cellar masters until 2012, when it was decided the right taste balance had been achieved. It is said to feature autumnal notes of plum and dates, mingling with flavours of gingerbread, prune stone and ginger, and punctuated by a final touch of tobacco leaf. The Cognac is bottled in a black crystal decanter, created exclusively by Baccarat and based on the shape of the classic Louis XIII bottle. A team of more than 20 master craftsmen complete more than 50 steps to create a single Rare Cask decanter, all of which must be carried out while maintaining the opaque crystal at a constant temperature. It is adorned with a 22 carat rose gold neck with delicately engraved quatrefoils patterns on both sides.
